The corpse is woken up using black magic. This is done because in Toraja the graves/cemetries are placed above limestones mountains.The corpse walks by itself, and it’s guided by an expert in black magic behind it. The corpse then falls down and isn’t able to walk again. Natives believe in Puya - or the afterlife - and believe it’s a long journey/process until the dead are truly deceased. It is extremely common for these natives to put a loved one in a temporary casket until they’ve saved enough for the whole ceremony, then switch the deceased from said crude casket to a nicer one. Traditional stories will say pretty much what the above says, but these people are merely keeping a tradition and sacred ceremony alive. This picture is deceiving. The body is partially decayed/mummified, the hands are in the position they were left in the casket, and the head is nudged slightly downward from resting on the pillow it was buried on.
